The Blayais and Bourgeais area
They nickname this area « the little Switzerland of the Gironde » because of its green hills, its enchanting landscapes and its climate tempered by the proximity of both the Dordogne and its estuary.
Vineyards were planted in this region as early as the Roman times, in the first century B.C.

But it is during the 17th century that wine growing took off, with the production of white wines meant for distillation.

The citadels of Blaye (Once upon a time, its fortress served as a summer residence for the Bordeaux archbishops) and of Bourg-sur-Gironde gave their names to this two wine growing areas : the Blayais and the Bourgeais.
